To say fans love Jack Daniel’s is an understatement: the most famous Tennessee whiskey is – by a margin of about 25 million bottles – the bestselling whiskey in the country.
But today fans have something new and very different to be excited about – just in time for the holidays.
The just-announced limited edition for 2022 is a mouthful: Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt. While bourbon and Tennessee whiskies (which meet all the legal requirements to be labelled bourbon, but Jack Daniel’s chooses not to) remain by far the most popular domestic options, American Single Malts have been growing in popularity, especially with craft distillers, and it makes sense, since just about all whiskey production on earth has roots in Scotland, where single malts are common. But this is the first whiskey of its kind ever from the Jack Daniel Distillery Lynchburg.
The Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt is crafted from 100% malted barley that is ground, fermented and distilled in Lynchburg. Then, like the bestselling black label (Old No. 7), it passes through Jack Daniel’s traditional charcoal mellowing process. But then things get funky – after it is matured for at least four years in the new, charred American white oak barrels used in all bourbons, it is then finished for an additional two years in the finest quality Spanish Oloroso sherry casks from the Antonio Paez Lobato Cooperage. Double wood ageing with sherry finish is used for some of the finest whiskies in the world, including the most collectible of all, Scotland’s vaunted The Macallan. But unlike most double-wooded Scotch, the Jack Daniels is bottled straight from the sherry casks at full strength, 106.1 to 107.8 proof, so you are probably going to want to add a generous splash of water.
“Our Special Release series highlights our ongoing innovations and exceptional whiskeys from the Jack Daniel Distillery, and I’m excited to share this expression as our team set out to craft an American Single Malt that’s uniquely Jack Daniel’s,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller (via press release). “The combination of maturing in oak barrels and finishing in sherry casks produces incredible complexity and provides a full-bodied and sophisticated whiskey experience. We’ve never crafted a whiskey like this in Lynchburg and can’t wait to share it with our friends.”
I have not had a chance to sample it yet, but since this is big news in the world of whiskey, I wanted to share it with you all as soon as possible, and based on my experience with previous Jack Daniels annual special releases, and my passion for sherry aged spirits, I have high hopes. The distillery’s tasting notes say: “The Special Release American Single Malt Whiskey has an aroma of soft oak, fruit and cocoa. Flavors of caramel and vanilla are complemented by notes of chocolate-covered nuts and berries, with a subtle sherry finish.”
The new release will be available nationwide in limited quantities beginning this month (November 2022) at a recommend price of $70 for a 700ml bottle.
