Cancun: A Staple For American Tourists

Cancun is one of Mexico’s most popular—and most visited—resort areas. With direct flights from many U.S. cities, Cancun is an easy long-weekend getaway, and a trip can be catered to various demographics, including families, couples and groups. What makes Cancun so popular among travelers is it’s combination of nice beaches, turquoise blue sea, agreeable weather, and perhaps most important—excellent air and land connectivity. Cancun has been in the tourism business for so long, that it’s a well-oiled machine. For travelers coming out of a two-year pandemic, they want easy and Cancun makes that possible.

The destination also appeals to a variety of different interests, including enthusiasts of outdoor adventure, spa and luxury, history and culture, shoppers and food lovers.

What to Do

Cancun’s mystical cenotes (a labyrinth of underground caves filled with water) make it popular for snorkelers and adventure seekers.

For beach lovers, jet skiing, parasailing and a variety of other water sports—including SUP, kayaking, and snorkeling—are available up and down Cancun’s expansive coastline.

Golfers can enjoy the region’s seven golf courses while shoppers can explore high-end stores to one-of-a-kind boutiques.

Many travelers will take the ferry to Isla Mujeres and explore the island by foot or by golf cart. Other popular excursions include Xcaret and Chichen Itza.

Where to Stay

The infostructure of hotels in Cancun also sets it apart. It’s considered a tourism leader in Latin America. What started in the early 1970s has since grown into a world-class, year-round destination.

Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun All Inclusive Spa Resort was built 30 years ago, and at that time, they had their choice of locations to build. The owners chose what is often referred to as the “elbow” of Cancun for its privacy, seclusion and gentle waters.

Over the years, the hotel has moved with the times. They transformed their ten indoor tennis courts into the sleek 40,000-square-foot Gem Spa. They added a massive high-tech and totally immersive Coral KidZ Club. Then in 2020 they made their biggest change—they introduced Infinite Luxury by Grand Fiesta Americana and officially transitioned into an all-inclusive resort.

Over the last two years since transitioning into an all-inclusive, the resort has added new dining outlets including the beachfront boho-chic Nah K’aax, an Asian-inspired toes in the sand restaurant, and a high-tech dining option, The Table. This interactive, immersive dining experience is meant to be a culinary journey through Mexico’s rich history, while dining on a multi-course gourmet menu that celebrates the country’s authentic cuisine through indigenous, locally sourced ingredients.

In addition to the two new outlets, the resort has two longtime, award-wining restaurants: the French-Mediterranean Le Basilic and the authentic Mexican eatery La Joya. Le Basilic is one of only a handful of restaurants in Mexico to hold the AAA Five Diamond distinction. La Joya has nightly entertainment that includes a live 10-piece Mariachi band and traditional singing, along with tequila tastings for an immersive cultural experience.

Since transitioning to an all-inclusive model, the resort has added a variety of on-property entertainment that includes authentic Mexican entertainment at Grand Coral Theater every Friday evening and a variety of shows each night in the lobby or out by the pool. On Wednesday and Saturday nights, there is a fire show on the beach at Nah K’aax. Daytime activities include Yoga, SUP Yoga, water aerobics, as well live music and a DJ at the pool.

The Gem Spa is another popular spot for guests. The treatments are inspired by gemstone therapy, and the dramatic 90-minute 10-step hydrotherapy ritual is a fan favorite.

Up next for the property? The hotel has embarked on a largescale dining project that includes the construction of three new high-end restaurants that are scheduled to open winter 2022-23. The three new outlets include a Japanese restaurant with teppanyaki tables, a steakhouse and an Italian eatery.
