Today is National Tattoo Day, which is celebrated annually as a day to celebrate tattoo artists, the history of tattoos and their importance on pop culture.
It isn’t easy choosing your first tattoo design, and they are permanent works of art on your body, so it’s best to think it out, thoroughly. For inspiration on National Tattoo Day, you don’t have to go for a whole back piece to enter the world of tattooing. There are stylish, dainty designs of flowers that are the perfect fit for a subtle impact, and it’s too easy to turn to celebrities with flower tattoos as inspiration.
In fact, this hot girl summer has been all about flower tattoos. And a number of fashion models have recently shared their tiny flower tattoos, whether it’s Bella Hadid or Hailey Bieber, or actress Vanessa Hudgens. Many have flower tattoos like roses, daisies, or lilies.
According to one flower expert, Jinju Kim, whose tattoo artist moniker is JooJoo, works as a tattoo artist in Seoul, flowers are the safest and most versatile kind of ink.
“I think celebrities need a lot of image changes to fit the situation due to the nature of their jobs,” he said. “That’s why it seems they don’t like tattoos that are too big to stand out in the public eye. As a result, small flower tattoos are a practical solution that anyone can get.”
“The most popular flower tattoo is, of course, the rose,” said Kim. While it might sound cliché, iconic stars have this flower inked—like Scarlett Johansson, who has a huge tattoo on her back of roses and thorns, while Bella Hadid has a small rose just above her left elbow.
“The rose is a powerful flower that suits everyone well, for its romantic symbolism. But right now, I think the most popular flower right now for tattoos is the daisy. The daisy flower inked in white and yellow is iconic, simple, and super charming.”
Many artists have daisy tattoos. Musician Nia Lovelis has a daisy tattoo to honor her sister and bandmate Rena Lovelis, while singer-songwriter Dev also has a daisy tattoo on her arm. British singer Foxes also has a daisy tattoo. “I think daisy tattoos go well with any part of the body,” he adds.
The most popular spot for flower tattoos is inked on the back of the hand or neck. “But it’s recommended only to get a tattoo in the area if you want it exposed,” said Kim.
“Another popular location for flower tattoos is on your forearm or ankle,” he said. “But if you want to hide the tattoo, get it on your ribs, hour hips or your back. You can decide for yourself whether you want to show your flower tattoo to others.”
Among Korean celebrities who have flower tattoos, include Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon who has a rose tattoo, and Baek Yerin who has an enormous rose tattoo in full bloom across her waistline.
While color tattoos have been more popular in the past, 2022 is all about the monochrome or single-color black tattoo. “One absolute favorite I’ve found is the black flower, and it is a timeless tattoo that won’t go out of style,” said Kim.
“Many clients who want to get a tattoo for the first time, seem to think that it is easier to get a black tattoo. It all depends on your personal taste.”
If you’re considering your first dainty flower tattoo, keep it simple. The more detail you get on a tiny tattoo, you risk it changing with your skin.
“For flowers with too many details, it is not recommended to receive them in a smaller size,” said Kim. “If you receive a tattoo that requires complex details in a small size, there is a high probability that it will smear over time. But you can’t go wrong with a flower tattoo, it’s timeless, and it never goes out of style.”
