It’s Pride Month, but all through the year many fine hotels and resorts offer LGBTQ+ friendly lodgings, often with special programs. Here’s a sampling.
Thompson Playa del Carmen – Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Mexico continues to be a travel hot spot according to Google Trends. Thompson Playa del Carmen, a two-in-one adults-only urban resort in the heart of Playa del Carmen’s Quinta Avenida, is celebrating Pride Month by hosting weekly rooftop pool parties with live DJ performances and drag queens all month long at the famous Alessia Day Club.
The property was designated a safe and friendly hotel for the LGBTQ+ community. The ‘Queer Destinations Committed’ distinction is an internationally recognized standard that aligns with companies and destinations that welcome the LGBTQ+ community through awareness programs, trainings, and consulting.
Crowne Plaza HY36 – New York, NY
Midtown Manhattan hotel Crowne Plaza HY36 launched its Pride package — Stay with Pride — to last through June. The package includes two Pride-themed cocktails at the hotel’s restaurant Burgerology and a curated welcome bag filled with all Pride necessities and goodies, such as sunblock, glitter, and of course a Pride flag.
Additionally, Crowne Plaza HY36 will donate $10 for every package booked to The Ali Forney Center, a NYC-based nonprofit that protects LGBTQ+ youth from homelessness and empowers them with the tools needed to live independently. Crowne Plaza HY36 will also be hosting a drag brunch series throughout the month of June and will be serving up spirited cocktails, including the BennyDeLaCrem, Jiggles Caliente and SilkyNutmeg.
Travelers staying downtown can choose from a variety of inclusive hotels (like 21c Museum Hotel), and will be in the heart of what is affectionately known as the “Fruit Loop” – a walkable circuit of bars, venues, and clubs that cater to the LGBTQ+ crowd.
One of the oldest and largest gay bars (18,000 square feet under one roof) in the country, The Bar Complex hosts nightly drag shows and even earned its own historical marker. To catch a drag brunch and delicious bites, head to Epping’s or Lockbox (21c Museum Hotel’s restaurant) or opt for a quiet breakfast at the queer-owned Lussi Brown Coffee Bar, an artisanal coffee shop and bar. While the destination celebrates the LGBTQ+ community year-round, June is particularly exciting when the Lexington Pride Festival draws over 50,000 people to the city.
Marriott Marquis Houston – Houston, TX
This year, the 44th annual Houston LGBT+ Pride Celebration® Festival and Parade will take place downtown on June 25. Experience various entertainment shows, DJs, a family fun zone as well as exhibition and vendor booths. Overnight guests can stay at the nearby Marriott Marquis Houston – home to the world’s largest Texas-shaped rooftop lazy river. Wind down after the festivities in a private cabana or leisurely float, backdropped by sweeping views of downtown Houston.
InterContinental New York Times Square – New York, NY
Whether visiting for a pride celebration, looking for a weekend away, or taking advantage of InterContinental Times Square’s prime location near Broadway, book with the hotel’s Stay with Pride package and 5% of the room fee will be donated to the Trevor Project. As an added bonus, guests booking with the package can also enjoy a complimentary round of the hotel’s signature 75th anniversary cocktail for two at The Stinger Cocktail Bar & Kitchen.
LEGOLAND New York Resort – Goshen, NY
Families visiting LEGOLAND New York, located just outside NYC in New York’s Hudson Valley, can celebrate Pride Month together. Stop by the world’s smallest Pride Parade (located in MINILAND USA), to discover colorful minifigures, then explore the Park’s seven themed lands, including the world premiere LEGO Factory Adventure ride, the Dragon Coaster, and LEGO® NINJAGO® The Ride.
The hotel’s 250-themed guest rooms include a separate sleeping area just for kids (with bunk beds and a trundle) and interactive features throughout. The rooms (think: Pirate, Kingdom, LEGO Friends, and LEGO® NINJAGO® themes) feature an innovative Google Nest Hub that can do anything from telling children an immersive bedtime story to sending them on an in-room scavenger hunt or ordering room service.
Trinity Pride Fest celebrates Fort Worth, TX’s queer community with a vibrant festival on June 25th at Magnolia Green Park with live music, drag performances and more. Beyond the festival, visitors can celebrate Pride cowboy-style in Fort Worth’s LGBTQ+-friendly bars and restaurants, including Club Changes and Urban Cowboy Saloon, the city’s largest gay bar featuring an epic dance floor illuminated by a bejeweled guitar-shaped disco ball.
For a more low-key evening, The Chat Room Pub is an unofficial queer hang out on the bustling Magnolia Ave. with live music, an outdoor patio and infamous house-made “El Niño” jalapeno-infused tequila shots.
The Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club – St. Petersburg, FL
St. Petersburg is home to Florida’s largest Pride celebration, St. Pete Pride, which brings over a month of festivities to downtown St. Pete. The historic Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club offers luxury open-air amenities so guests can relax in between events, including two outdoor pools, a picturesque 18-hole golf course, a private marina, tennis courts and a waterfront “Floribbean” restaurant Paul’s Landing.
Additional Pride events include a one woman show by the legend herself, Sandra Bernhard; a Juneteenth celebration; a family-friendly carnival; and the grand Pride Parade, whose route marches right in front of the resort.
