Discover Metcalfe Hotel: A Refurbished Luxury Boutique Property In Canada’s Capital

The 4-star Metcalfe Hotel in downtown Ottawa has been newly redesigned. Part of the Gray Collection, a Montreal-based and family-owned group of hotels known for their local hospitality, the property breathes Canadian warmth and flare into a luxurious boutique concept exclusive to Canada’s capital. Set in Downtown Ottawa, The Metcalfe Hotel combines urban sophistication and approachable luxury. The historical property is conveniently located close to Rideau Canal and Parliament Hill.

The redesign, executed in collaboration with the Ottawa-based design team Iron & Ivory, put the focus on a warm welcome, maintaining the integrity of the heritage building through the preservation of exposed brick walls and classical mouldings. Parisian accents like Art Deco-inspired reflective surfaces, glass railings, and cane furniture elevate the space to a contemporary yet inviting celebration of the Ottawa community.

As they enter the property, guests will be greeted by the five-story, glass-encircled atrium that houses the café and multi functional lounge. Here, the hotel’s welcoming ambience is brought to life through the greenery, exposed brick, stone coffee tables, and comfortable lounge chairs, all bathed in natural light from the surrounding windows. At the heart of the hotel, the atrium is a conversational space to socialize and people watch. At The Metcalfe pets are also welcome and can enjoy the royal treatment.

In addition, the curved bar that extends from the lobby to the new adjacent French restaurant, Cocotte Bistro, unifies the two spaces, allowing for fluid movement throughout. Drawing from French influences, accents such as black and white tile flooring and bistro style seating, rattan furniture and soft and bevelled edges mixed with muted lighting make for a cozy dining atmosphere. Delight in the flavours of France in a spacious, open-concept dining room wear you’ll enjoy a refined dining experience.

The Living Room is a meeting spot for art aficionados. Located in the center of the 5-story atrium, it is a cozy yet modern resting space where locals and hotel guests can sit back and unwind, grab a book from the communal library, or have a bite or a drink in the café and bar space.

In place of the previous damask wallpaper within the 108 guest rooms and suites, softer paint allows for a soothing feel, and the French artwork placed throughout the hotel continues its historical narrative. Amenities also include down duvets and pillows by Marie L’Oie and Le Labo bath products.

Sustainable design practices and prioritizing suppliers from Ottawa and around Canada help elevate the Metcalfe Hotel into a monument of regional achievement, past and present. Notably, the hotel’s artwork was provided by Claudia Gutierrez from Ottawa, and lighting is from Toronto’s Luminaire Authentik.

Most significant in the hotel’s metamorphosis are the conservation efforts of local history to birth a cosmopolitan comfort in the heart of Ottawa. Once a politician’s residence, then a YMCA, and a meeting place for prominent figures during the confederation era, the reopening revitalizes the building’s inviting nature. The new Metcalfe Hotel is a testament to the warmth and vibrancy that emanates from the surrounding community. The upscale property offers a unique melange of history and modernity.
