Jetty Extracts Announces OCal ‘Comparable-To-Organic’ Certification For Its Cannabis Concentrates

California-based cannabis concentrates manufacturer Jetty Extracts announced on Tuesday that the company’s solventless extraction process has been certified under the state’s OCal Program, which certifies that cannabis products have been grown and manufactured under “comparable-to-organic” standards. Jetty will be the first brand to introduce OCal-certified solventless products to the California market beginning January 2023, according to a statement from the company.

OCal is a unique term for commercial cannabis products in California, comparable to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program (NOP) and the California Organic Food and Farming Act (COFFA). The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has developed regulations for OCal certification of marijuana cultivators, while certification for cannabis product manufacturers such as Jetty is overseen by the Food and Drug Branch (FDB) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), which enforces standards for manufactured cannabis products sold, labeled or represented as OCal.

“The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) was mandated by state law to develop a program for manufactured cannabis products that is comparable to the National Organic Program and California Organic Food and Farming Act,” the agency explains on its website. “The term ‘organic’ is a designation reserved by the United States Department of Agriculture for products that are certified as organic, per the standards of the National Organic Program. Because cannabis is illegal under federal law, cannabis operations cannot be certified organic under the National Organic Program, therefore the word organic cannot be used to refer to cannabis grown or manufactured in California.”

The OCal Program safeguards the integrity of its standards by working with third-party certifying agents to ensure compliance with the OCal Program’s regulations. Through certification, the program ensures that cannabis products bearing the OCal seal have been certified to consistent, uniform standards comparable to the National Organic Program.

To qualify for OCal certification, cannabis plant material must be non-bioengineered and cultivated without the use of most conventional pesticides and fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge and not be subjected to ionizing radiation. OCal-certified manufactured products must also be made without artificial preservatives, colors or flavors. Only specific types of extraction, including solventless extraction, are eligible for certification.

Solventless Extraction For Clean Cannabis

Jetty Extracts was founded in San Diego in 2013, making the company one of the pioneers of cannabis extraction at a commercial scale. The company is a leader in solventless extraction, which uses only ice, water, heat and pressure instead of harsh solvents such as ethanol or hydrocarbons to produce cannabis concentrates.

Data released by cannabis market analyst firm BDSA in June shows that solventless concentrates (the vape rosin product category) spiked by 1405% over the previous year. Between June 2021 and June 2022, the category grew by an average of 132% each month. In California, solventless products from Oakland-based Jetty Extracts command 55% of the state’s market. Ron Gershoni, Jetty co-founder and CEO, says that solventless concentrates are gaining popularity with enthusiasts because they preserve the flavor and potency of cannabis so well. But achieving the best quality isn’t just a matter of the process. With flavor such a priority, the cannabis used is just as important as the manufacturing method.

“To make solventless extracts, you really need a very high-quality starting plant material,” Gershoni said in an interview for Cannabis Now. “And so, on average, the plant material that you’re processing and extracting from in a solventless extraction is going to be some of the best quality fresh-frozen cannabis that you can find. What you put in is what you get out.”

Jetty expects its new OCal-certified solventless extracts to hit licensed cannabis dispensaries in California beginning in January 2022. Nate Ferguson, Jetty co-founder and chief product officer, says the new certification gives consumers new confidence in choosing clean cannabis products that have been produced with care.

“Consumer safety has been a top priority of Jetty since the company’s inception,” Ferguson said in a statement from the company. “Jetty’s OCal certification is a testament to our consistent efforts to create the cleanest, most sustainable and innovative products on the market and we’re committed to meeting the growing consumer demand for transparent cannabis products.”
