Model Carolyn Murphy And Mother Launch Upcylced Capsule Collection

Carolyn Murphy as a California surf babe for denim brand Mother is everything on this Monday.

The famed model and environmental activist has partnered for the second time with Los Angeles denim label, Mother, for the brand’s upcycled 12-piece capsule collection called Surf’s Up. The collection has been created in support of the Saves The Waves Coalition (STW) and the non-profit’s mission of protecting global ecosystems. The collection launches today, International Surf Day, exclusively on the brand’s website and consists of summer staples such as shorts and t-shirts reimagined with patterns, prints, stripes inspired by Murphy’s family ties to Hawaii and a vintage California surf and skate vibe.

“The beach, surfing and wanderlust have been a part of my life since I was a young girl,” says Murphy, who is a surfer, in a statement. “My uncles were surfers in the 70s straddling their time between California and Hawaii — one of them in particular being a designer for surf lifestyle brands — so I was always bestowed in surf paraphernalia. This collection is a nod to my uncle Bobby, my California lifestyle and the aesthetic of 70s skate and surf culture and everything that I would want to pack.”

In the campaign imagery, Murphy and Mother create the story of perfect California surf chic replete with a sea-soaked, sun-kissed blonde (Murphy) at the center wearing the collection on Southern California’s famed glittering shores.

The Surf’s Up collection is Mother’s third foray into the territory of upcycled fashion, an endeavor they have named 60% MOTHER, which uses both pre- and post-consumer waste made from repurposed rag house garments, deadstock, and vintage pieces. For example, the denim short short shorts in the Surf’s Up collection are repurposed from Mother’s own denim while the Seamed Hawaiian shirt is handmade from two vintage shirts pieced together. Similarly, The Shorty Board Short combines patterns from vintage Hawaiian shirts. As to be expected, no two pieces are the same.

The collaboration brings with it a donation from Mother to the tune of $50,000 for the Save The Waves Coalition whose mission is to protect 1,000 surf ecosystems by 2030. STW chooses the where to focus their efforts based on the proximity of biodiversity hotspots which are categorized as critical to marine conservation to the world’s most iconic surfing waves.

Conceptually, the capsule collection was designed to provide all the necessary, no-fuss building blocks for summer beach days—shorts to pair with tees that pair with relaxed trousers or a casual stripy tank dress for after the beach. The prices in the capsule range from $125 to $350.
