New Figures Show Americans Are Returning To Turkey In Record Numbers
Americans are flocking to Turkey in unprecedented numbers, according to figures released on August 22 by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Some 377,000 Americans visited Turkey in the first half of 2022—an increase of 76.8% over the same period in 2019, before the onset of the pandemic.
“This is an extraordinary and exciting result,” said Yalçın Lokmanhekim, the General Manager of TGA, the Turkey Tourism Promotion and Development Agency, in a press release.
Turkey’s top destination for Americans is the singular city of Istanbul, straddling the Bosporus in both Europe and Asia and home to architectural treasures including the Hagia Sofia, the Mosque of Süleyman, and the Blue Mosque. The Turkish Aegean coast, the city of Izmir, and the otherworldly landscapes of Cappadocia also rank high on American visitors’ itineraries.
At its height in 2019, Turkey attracted around 51 million foreign visitors, ranking the country as the sixth most popular tourist destination in the world.
